that he instructed a man, when he lay down to sleep, to say: … Then he mentioned it. A man said to him, “Did you hear this from ʿUmar?” He replied, “From one better than ʿUmar: the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
The wording is that of Muslim. *
3999 — “O Allah, I make with You a covenant which You will never fail to fulfil. I am only human; so whichever believer I have harmed, insulted, cursed, or flogged, make it for him a blessing, a purification, and a means by which You draw him near to Yourself on the Day of Resurrection.”
Muslim (8/25) and Aḥmad (2/243 and 449) narrated it through al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, who related that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … Then he mentioned it.
It has other chains of transmission from Abū Hurayrah:
- Among them is the narration of Sālim, the client of the Naṣriyyīn, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: … Then he mentioned it.
Muslim and Aḥmad (2/493) narrated it.
- From Abū Ṣāliḥ, from him, in an abbreviated form.
It was also narrated by Muslim and Aḥmad (2/488 and 496), as well as al-Dārimī (2/314–315).
- From Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from him.
Muslim narrated it in a somewhat abbreviated form. Al-Bukhārī (6361) records this portion of it:
“O Allah, whichever believer I have reviled, make that a means of nearness to You for him on the Day of Resurrection.”
