336 — “For one of you to have his belly filled with pus that consumes him is better for him than to have it filled with poetry.”
This hadith was reported by a number of the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, including Abu Hurayrah, Abd Allah ibn Umar, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Umar, and others.
- As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, it was recorded by al-Bukhari (4/146), in al-Adab al-Mufrad (860), Muslim (7/50), Abu Dawud (5009), al-Tirmidhi (2/139), Ibn Majah (3759), al-Tahawi in Sharh al-Maʻani (2/370), and Ahmad (2/288, 355, 391, 478, 480), through several routes from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from him. Al-A'mash explicitly stated that he had heard it directly in al-Bukhari’s narration. He was corroborated by Asim, from Abu Salih, in al-Tahawi’s collection. Ahmad recorded it (2/331). He was also corroborated by Abu Ma'mar, from Abu Salih, with the same report, but I was unable to identify this Abu Ma'mar.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “It is a good, authentic hadith.”
