3991 — “Kill snakes and dogs; and kill the two-striped serpent and the short-tailed serpent, for they impair the eyesight and cause pregnant women to miscarry.”
It has been reported on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar and ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with them both:
- As for the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ command that dogs be killed, and say…” Then he mentioned it.
Muslim narrated it (7/38)—thus, with the addition of the words “dogs.”
Al-Bukhārī (3297), Abū Dāwūd (5/411/5252), al-Tirmidhī (5/191/1528)—who authenticated it—Ibn Mājah (2/1169/3535), Ibn Ḥibbān (7/461/5609), and Aḥmad (2/9 and 121) also narrated it, but they do not contain the word “dogs.”
It was also narrated through the route of Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar by the two Shaykhs and others; it is referenced in al-Irwāʾ, no. 2549.
- As for the hadith of ʿĀʾishah, it has several routes from her:
The first: through Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from her, may Allah Most High be pleased with her.
Al-Bukhārī (2308), Ibn Mājah (2/1169/3534), and Aḥmad (6/29, 52, 134, and 230) narrated it in abbreviated form.
The second: through al-Sāʾibah, from her, may Allah be pleased with her.
Aḥmad narrated it (6/49, 83, and 147).
Mālik also narrated it (3/142) from al-Sāʾibah as a mursal report.
