Both were narrated through Abu Usāmah Ḥammād ibn Usāmah.
I nearly judged this version to be anomalous, had I not found a corroborating report for it through Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from Aishah, who said:
Gabriel—peace be upon him—brought me to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—in a piece of silk and said: “This is your wife in this world and the Hereafter.”
Ibn Hibban and others narrated it with an authentic chain of transmission meeting Muslim’s criteria.
See my commentary on al-Mishkat (6182—the second recension). *
3988—(“Aslam: may Allah keep it safe; Ghifar: may Allah forgive it. Indeed, I did not say it; rather, Allah—Mighty and Majestic—is He who said it.”)
Muslim (7/177) and al-Hakim (4/82) narrated it through Khuthaym ibn ʿIrak, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: … and he mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the criteria of both al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Bukhari only narrated it in abbreviated form through Muhammad ibn Ziyad, from Abu Hurayrah, omitting the words, “Indeed, I …”; this wording is, however, narrated by Muslim. Ahmad also narrated it (2/469).
Al-Hakim claimed that Muslim had omitted the hadith of ʿIrak, but he was mistaken.
This portion is corroborated by a hadith of Abu Dharr:
Muslim narrated it in abbreviated form as above in the cited place. He also narrated it at the end of Abu Dharr’s lengthy hadith concerning his journey with his brother Unays to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—in Mecca (7/152–155), through ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Samit, who said: Abu Dharr said: … and he related it in full.
