Sound Guidance for Callers to Islam and Preachers

3981—“Go with these two sandals of mine. Whoever you meet beyond this garden wall who testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, with his heart certain of it—give him glad tidings of Paradise.”

It was reported by Muslim (1/44–45) and Abu ‘Awanah (1/9–10), through the route of ‘Ikrimah ibn ‘Ammar, who said: Abu Kathir narrated to me; Abu Hurayrah narrated to me:

We were sitting around the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—with Abu Bakr and ‘Umar among a group of people. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—stood up and left us, but he was delayed in returning to us. We feared that he might be taken away from us, so we became alarmed and rose. I was the first to be alarmed, and I went out in search of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—until I came to an enclosure belonging to the Ansar, of Banu al-Najjar. I went around it, looking for a gate, but could not find one. Then I saw a small watercourse entering the enclosure from an outside well—the small watercourse being a channel of water—so I crouched down and entered upon the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him.

He said, “Abu Hurayrah?”

I said, “Yes, Messenger of Allah.”

He said, “What is the matter with you?”

I said, “You were among us, then you rose and were delayed in returning to us. We feared that you might be taken away from us, so we became alarmed, and I was the first to be alarmed. I came to this enclosure and crouched down as a fox crouches, while these people are behind me.”

He said, “O Abu Hurayrah!” and gave me his two sandals. He then said: … and he mentioned the hadith. He said:

The first person I met was ‘Umar, who said, “What are these two sandals, Abu Hurayrah?”

I said, “They are the sandals of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him. He sent me with them, commanding me that whomever I meet who testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, with his heart certain of it, I should give him glad tidings of Paradise.”

Then ‘Umar struck me on the chest with his hand, and I fell upon my backside. He said, “Go back, Abu Hurayrah!”
