3979—“When three people are travelling, let one of them lead them in prayer; and the one best versed in the Quran has the greatest right to lead them.”
It was reported by Muslim (2/33), al-Darimi (286), al-Nasa’i (1/153), Ibn Khuzaymah (3/4/1508), Ibn Hibban (3/287/2129), al-Bayhaqi (3/119), al-Tayalisi (386/2152)—and through him also by al-Bayhaqi—Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/343), and Ahmad (3/24, 34, 36, 48, 51, and 84), all through routes from Qatadah, from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: … and he cited it.
The addition is found in Ibn Hibban and al-Tayalisi, through Shu‘bah and Hisham, from Qatadah. *
3980—“When any one of you alights at a place, let him say: ‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.’ Nothing will harm him until he departs from that place.”
It was reported by Muslim (8/76), al-Darimi (289), al-Tirmidhi (10/133)—who authenticated it—al-Nasa’i in The Deeds of the Day and Night (560 and 561), Ibn Majah (2/1174/3547), Ibn Hibban (4/167/2689), al-Bayhaqi (5/253), and Ahmad (6/377), all from Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas, from Khawlah bint Hakim, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: … and he cited it.
Some of them narrated it with the wording: “Whoever alights at a place.”
Al-Suyuti cited it with this wording in al-Ziyadah ‘ala al-Jami‘ al-Saghir, through the narrations of Ahmad, Muslim, and al-Tirmidhi from Khawlah, and the narration of al-Tabarani in al-Kabir from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘A’ish. *
