“May Allah curse whoever has done this! Have I not forbidden this?!” Then he said:
“If one of you draws his sword and looks at it, then wishes to hand it to his brother, let him first sheath it and then hand it to him.”
Ahmad reported it (5/41–42).
I say: Its chain of transmission is good. Al-Hafiz said in al-Fath (13/25):
“Ahmad and al-Tabarani narrated it through a good chain from Abu Bakrah.”
I say: It is evident that the text of this report differs from that of the hadith cited in the heading.
Nevertheless, the hadith has a corroborating report from Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. Muslim and others narrated it, and it has been documented in Ghayat al-Maram, no. 446. *
- “When one of you stands to pray, let him not spit in front of himself, for he is conversing privately with Allah so long as he is in prayer; nor to his right, for there is an angel on his right. Rather, let him spit to his left or beneath his foot, then bury it.”
Al-Bukhari reported it (416—al-Fath), as did Ibn Hibban (2266), Ahmad (2/318), and al-Sulami in Sahifat Hammam ibn Munabbih (45/119), all through the route of Abd al-Razzaq. It is found in his Musannaf (1/431/1686), from Ma'mar, from Hammam, who heard Abu Hurayrah narrate from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and he cited it.
Abd al-Razzaq also narrated it (1681) from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurayrah, with similar wording.
A number of narrators corroborated him from al-Zuhri with this report. Some of them mentioned Abu Sa'id al-Khudri alongside Abu Hurayrah. Its documentation has already preceded under no. 1274.
