“When you see a funeral procession, stand; and whoever follows it should not sit down until it has been set down.”
It was reported by al-Bukhari (1310), Muslim, as well as al-Tirmidhi (1043), al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad (3/51). Al-Tirmidhi said:
“This is a good, authentic hadith, and it is the view of Ahmad and Ishaq. They said: Whoever follows a funeral procession must not sit until it has been lowered from the men’s shoulders.”
Ahmad (3/48) then narrated through Sharik, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Sa‘id, who said:
Whenever the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—followed a funeral procession, he would not sit down until it was set down.
The implication of this—as also of the hadith under discussion—is that one may sit after it has been placed on the ground. Al-Bukhari indicated this in his chapter heading for the hadith, saying:
“Chapter: Whoever follows a funeral procession should not sit until it has been lowered from the men’s shoulders; if he sits, he is to be instructed to stand.”
Al-Bukhari and Muslim, as well as others, also reported from ‘Amir ibn Rabi‘ah, attributed to the Prophet, something similar to the hadith under discussion. *
- “If Satan plays with one of you in his sleep, let him not tell people about it.”
It was reported by Muslim (7/55), Ibn Majah (3912), and Ahmad (3/315), through Abu Sufyan, who said:
A man came to the Prophet while he was delivering a sermon and said, “O Messenger of Allah, last night I saw—in the manner of one asleep—”
