I say: Both men are trustworthy narrators recorded by the two Shaykhs, so their sole transmission does not detract from it—especially since those who shared with them in narrating the basic hadith reported it in similar wordings, with some adding details not found in others, in the two Sahihs and elsewhere. The closest of them is Ibn Wahb, who said: ‘Amr informed me, from Ibn Shihab, with its complete wording, similarly—except that he did not say, ‘and one of you is fasting.’
Muslim reported it (2/72).
Bakr ibn Mudar also corroborated ‘Amr in narrating it from ‘Amr ibn al-Harith.
Abu ‘Awanah reported it (2/16).
‘Uqayl also corroborated ‘Amr, from Ibn Shihab, with a similar wording.
Al-Bukhari reported it (672).
Added to the foregoing is the fact that this addition, ‘and one of you is fasting,’ does not conflict with the other narrations, for their unrestricted and inclusive wording encompasses both the fasting person and others, as is apparent. Indeed, the fasting person is more entitled to this concession than one who is not fasting, as is apparent. And Allah knows best.
- “When you lead a people in prayer, make the prayer light for them.”
Muslim (2/44), Abu ‘Awanah (2/96), Ibn Majah (988), al-Bayhaqi (3/116), al-Tayalisi (129/940), and Ahmad (4/22) reported it through the route of Shu‘bah, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, who said: I heard Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib say: ‘Uthman ibn Abi al-‘As related: The last instruction the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—gave me was: “When you lead ...”’—the hadith.
It has other chains in Muslim, Abu ‘Awanah, the Musnad, and elsewhere.
It also has corroborating reports from a number of Companions, including Abu Hurayrah, who narrated something similar; and his hadith is more complete.
