As for al-Haythami’s statement after citing the hadith with this addition:
“Al-Tabarani narrated it through two chains of transmission, and the narrators of one of them are trustworthy.”
I say: This contains an error, or else some laxity in source attribution, for the chain whose narrators he deemed trustworthy is cited by him without the addition, like the version narrated by the rest; yet the addition does not conflict with their narration.
Note: One curious instance of source attribution is that the annotator on Sharh al-Sunnah did not attribute it to anyone besides Muslim, even though al-Baghawi himself also attributed it to al-Bukhari! *
3959—“When one of you perfects his Islam, every good deed he performs is recorded for him tenfold, up to seven hundredfold; and every evil deed he commits is recorded for him as one like it, until he meets Allah, exalted is He.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhari (42), Muslim (1/82), Abu Awanah (1/83–84), Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (1/226–228), al-Bayhaqi in The Names and Attributes (p. 71), al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (14/339/4148), and Ahmad (2/317), all through the route of Abd al-Razzaq: Maʿmar informed us, from Hammam ibn Munabbih, who said: “This is what Abu Hurayrah narrated to us from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
It is also found in The Scroll of Hammam ibn Munabbih (43/103).
Note: Another indication of the annotator’s haste and lack of careful verification is that he cited al-Bukhari as its source under the chapter, “They wish to change the words of Allah”! This hadith is not found there; rather, it contains another hadith from Abu Hurayrah concerning good deeds and evil deeds, which he confused with this one. *
