through the route of Hammad ibn Salamah: Thabit al-Bunani narrated to us from Anas ibn Malik that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: … and he related it in full.
With Muslim’s aforementioned chain from Anas ibn Malik, he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“I was brought, and they took me to Zamzam. My chest was opened, then it was washed with the water of Zamzam, then I was brought down …”
Sharik ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Namir also narrated it, saying: I heard Anas ibn Malik narrating to us about the night on which the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was taken on the Night Journey from the Kaabah Mosque:
Three men came to him before revelation had come to him, while he was asleep in the Sacred Mosque … He then related the hadith with its account, resembling the hadith of Thabit al-Bunani, though he brought some parts forward and delayed others, adding and omitting material.
It was reported by al-Bukhari (3570), Muslim, and Abu Awanah (1/125–126 and 135–137), though the latter did not mention the words, “while he was asleep,” thereby indicating that he considered this addition objectionable. It contradicts all the hadiths concerning the Night Journey and Ascension, which show that both took place while he was awake, not asleep. For this reason, the scholars counted them among his miracles, by which God distinguished him above all His creation.
Further confirming this is Qatadah’s narration from Anas, from Malik ibn Sasaah, that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“While I was between sleep and wakefulness, I heard someone say, ‘One of the three between the two men.’ Then a basin filled with wisdom and faith was brought to me, and I was opened from my throat to the lower part of my abdomen. Then my heart was taken out and washed with the water of Zamzam, and filled with wisdom and faith.
“A white mount was brought to me—smaller than a mule but larger than a donkey—called al-Buraq …” And he related the hadith.
