because they share the same teacher. However, Ḍirār ibn Ṣurad is weak and cannot be relied upon; rather, he is an abandoned narrator, accused of lying. And Allah knows best.
In any case, I decided to include the hadith in this Silsilah Ṣaḥīḥah because of its numerous corroborating reports.
The first statement, concerning the Muslims’ pledge of protection, has many corroborating reports, including the hadith of ʿAlī:
“Medina is a sanctuary …” It includes:
“The Muslims’ pledge of protection is one, and even the least of them may grant it. Whoever violates a Muslim’s pledge of protection is subject to the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will accept from him neither repentance nor ransom.”
It was narrated by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and others, and I have documented it in al-Irwāʾ (1058).
The statement concerning treachery has been narrated verbatim from a number of the Companions, and it has been documented above under no. (1690). *
3949—“Indeed, I have a Cistern stretching between the Kaʿbah and Jerusalem, whiter than milk, with vessels as numerous as the stars; and on the Day of Resurrection, I shall have more followers than any of the prophets.”
Ibn Mājah (4301) narrated it through ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, as a hadith traced to the Prophet.
I say: This chain of transmission is weak because of ʿAṭiyyah—al-ʿAwfī—who is weak and practised tadlīs.
However, the hadith has corroborating reports which indicate that it is authentic. Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim included many excellent such reports in al-Sunnah; see hadiths (718, 719, and 723), edited by me. *
