“I used to hear people speaking of the Basin, but I had not heard this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then, one day, while a maidservant was combing my hair, I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘O people!’
“I said to the maidservant, ‘Step away from me.’ She said, ‘He has only called the men; he has not called the women!’ I said, ‘I am one of the people!’ Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ...” and she mentioned it.
This is Muslim’s wording. Ahmad’s version reads:
“O people! While I am at the Basin, you will be brought before me in groups, but the paths will lead you apart. I shall call out to you, ‘Come now, to the path!’ Then a caller behind me will call out, ‘They changed after you!’ So I shall say, ‘Away with them! Away with them!’”
Its chain of transmission is sound according to Muslim’s criteria.
The hadith appears in al-Suyuti’s Zawa’id al-Jamiʿ through Muslim’s narration alone; reference to it has already been made under hadith 2948. *
3945—“Indeed, I was not sent as one who curses; rather, I was sent as a mercy.”
Muslim recorded it (8/24), as did al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (321), and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Jarir al-Salāmasi in Hadith Abu Ali al-Lihyani (q. h.—6), through Marwan al-Fazari, from Yazid ibn Kaysan, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:
“It was said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, supplicate against the idolaters.’ He said: ...” and he mentioned it.
Huyyaj ibn Bistam also narrated it, saying: Yazid ibn Kaysan narrated it to us with the latter clause placed before the former.
