Al-Nasāʾī transmitted it (2/319), and this version is more correct, since ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq al-Qurashī corroborated Ibn ʿAjlān in it. Al-Ḥākim declared it authentic according to Muslim’s conditions, and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. Its documentation has preceded under no. 1443, where I also mentioned a corroborating report from the hadith of ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir; thus, there is no need to repeat it.
The point is that this corroborating report and the aforementioned corroboration confirm the anomalous nature of Sulaymān ibn Ḥayyān’s narration with the wording, “this world.” Indeed, it is invalid, as indicated by the context of all the hadiths, quite apart from their wording.
On this occasion, I must explain the following—in defense of the Prophetic hadith and in refutation of one who follows his whims, declaring weak what is authentic of it and authentic what is weak, indeed what is false. I mean here Shaykh Aḥmad al-Ghumārī al-Maghribī. He ignored the anomaly just mentioned; rather, he reversed the matter, claiming it to be authentic and declaring what contradicted it weak, alleging that it was a manipulation by the narrators! In his book al-Mudāwī (1/258), he mentioned the hadith well known to be fabricated and false:
“Bury your dead among righteous people, for the deceased is harmed by an evil neighbour just as the living person is harmed by an evil neighbour.”
Yet he saw fit to declare it authentic, even at the cost of reversing established scholarly facts. He cited its chains and discussed some of them, quoting Ibn al-Jawzī and Ibn Ḥibbān, who stated that it is false and fabricated because it contains Sulaymān ibn ʿĪsā al-Sijzī, the liar. But he remained silent about some of the reports through which al-Suyūṭī had criticized Ibn al-Jawzī—although al-Suyūṭī’s laxness in this regard is well known. Among them is the lengthy hadith of ʿAlī, which states:
It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, does a righteous neighbour benefit one in the Hereafter?” He said, “Does he benefit in this world?” They replied, “Yes.” He said, “Thus, he benefits in the Hereafter.”
I say: This too contains the aforementioned liar, and al-Ghumārī knows that from my book
