“This is mursal, or has a double break; and it has a corroborating report in the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, which al-Bayhaqī transmitted in al-Shuʿab ...” He was referring to the hadith mentioned above. He then said:
“Ibn ʿAdī transmitted, through a weak chain, from Abū Hurayrah, attributing it to the Prophet: ‘When you perceive an evil omen, proceed, and place your trust in Allah ...’”
Further evidence for this third clause, apart from what has preceded, is the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, in which the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“Belief in evil omens is associationism. None of us is free of it ... but Allah dispels it through reliance upon Him.”
It was transmitted by the authors of the Sunan and others, and a number of scholars authenticated it. It has previously been documented under no. 429, and in Ghāyat al-Marām (186/303).
As for the final clause, “When you weigh, give extra weight,” it has already been noted that Ibn Mājah transmitted it; it is found in his Sunan (2222), and its chain of transmission is authentic according to the conditions of al-Bukhārī, as al-Būṣīrī stated. Ibn Mājah and other authors of the Sunan also transmit a corroborating report from Suwayd ibn Qays, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. Al-Tirmidhī, al-Ḥākim, and al-Dhahabī authenticated it, and it is as they said.
As for the comment by the annotator of Akhlāq al-Nabī (p. 105, Dār al-Kitāb al-ʿArabī), “The hadith is not authentic,” this is manifest ignorance. His annotations suggest that the man has no competence whatsoever in this discipline. What further confirms this is his comment on the hadith, “... the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—lifted [his garment] from his stomach, exposing two stones” (p. 223):
“Because of his statement—peace and blessings be upon him—‘We are a people who do not eat until we are hungry, and when we eat, we do not become full ...’!”
