Jābir. Yet Ibn Mājah records only its final clause.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ cited it in Tasdīd al-Qaws with its opening phrase, indicating the rest of it by saying:
“The hadith: Ibn Mājah, through the narration of Muḥārib from Jābir.”
This gives the impression that Ibn Mājah recorded it in its entirety, but that is not so, as stated above.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr cited it in full in al-Tamhīd (6/125), except for its final part. However, he had not located its chain of transmission, and said:
“It has been narrated from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—through a chain that I do not presently recall, that he said ...” He then cited it.
I examined Musnad al-Firdaws for it by means of al-Gharāʾib al-Multaqaṭah, but did not find it there; the copy is muddled and contains lacunae. And Allah knows best.
Nevertheless, I am inclined to regard the hadith as established on account of its corroborating reports. The first and second clauses have been narrated from Abū Hurayrah in the wording:
“The believer has three qualities ...”
It was narrated by a number of scholars, including Abū al-Shaykh, al-Bayhaqī, and others. It has been documented in the other work, al-Ḍaʿīfah (4019).
They have also been narrated from Ḥārithah ibn al-Nuʿmān by al-Ṭabarānī, with the wording:
“Three things are inseparable from my Ummah ...”
The hadith also contains the third clause, in similar wording. It has been documented in Ghāyat al-Marām (185/302), together with two mursal corroborating reports, one of them narrated by ʿAbd al-Razzāq. Al-Ḥāfiẓ referred to it in al-Fatḥ (10/213), saying:
