“The worst of earnings are the fee of a prostitute, the price of a dog, and the earnings of a cupper.”
The hadith also has a supporting narration from Ibn ʿAbbās with similar wording; its documentation has preceded in this Silsilah (1806).
Note: The first clause of the hadith has been narrated with an addition at its end: “…and it is even more vile than it.” This addition is not authentic, as I have explained in the other Silsilah (3459). *
3623—“From one Friday prayer to the next is an expiation for what lies between them, so long as major sins are avoided.”
It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah, from whom a group transmitted it:
First: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ḥuraqī:
Muslim (1/144), al-Tirmidhī (214), Ibn Mājah (1086)—whose wording is cited here—Ibn Khuzaymah (314 and 1814), Ibn Ḥibbān (1733 and 2488), Abū ʿAwānah (2/20), Aḥmad (2/484), al-Bayhaqī (2/467 and 10/187), al-Baghawī in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (345), and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in al-Tamhīd (4/46) narrated it through various routes from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father, from him.
Second: Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn:
Muslim (1/144), Aḥmad (2/359), and al-Bayhaqī (2/466) narrated it through Hishām ibn Ḥassān, from Ibn Sīrīn, from him.
Third: Isḥāq, the freedman of Zāʾidah:
Muslim (1/144), Aḥmad (2/400), and al-Bayhaqī (10/187) narrated it through Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād, from ʿUmar ibn Isḥāq, the freedman of Zāʾidah, from his father, from him.
