from Wasil ibn Abd al-A‘la and others, from Ibn Fudayl, from his father, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: … and he mentioned it.
Abu Ya‘la also narrated it (6171), and Ibn Hibban (6697) narrated it from him, through Wasil with the same chain.
Note: Ibn Hibban’s wording is: “For this I was cut off!” This differs from the narration of Abu Ya‘la—his own shaykh—in this very hadith, as well as from the narration of Muslim and the others, including al-Tirmidhi, who said:
“This is a good, authentic, singular hadith. We know it only through this route.”
Al-Baghawi said:
“This is an authentic hadith.” *
- “There are three which, when they appear, the faith of a soul will not benefit it if it had not believed before, or earned any good through its faith: the rising of the sun from the west, the Dajjal, and the Beast of the Earth.”
Muslim narrated it (1/95–96), as did al-Tirmidhi (3072), Abu ‘Awanah (1/107), Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/178), Ahmad (2/445), Abu Ya‘la (6170 and 6172), Ibn Mandah in al-Iman (1023), Abu ‘Amr al-Dani in al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan (695), and al-Tabari in his exegesis (8/76), through various routes from Fudayl ibn Ghazwan, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: … and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhi said:
“This is a good, authentic hadith.”
Note: In the printed edition of al-Musnad, “the Smoke” appears in place of “the Dajjal.” I consider this to be nothing but a scribal error. *
