3612—“While I was asleep, I saw people being presented before me, wearing shirts. Some reached to the breast, while others reached lower than that. Then ‘Umar was presented before me, wearing a shirt that he was dragging.” They said, “How did you interpret it, Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Religion.”
‘Abd al-Razzaq (20385) narrated it, and through him Ahmad (5/373–374) and al-Tirmidhi (2285)—whose wording is given here—from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, from one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ... and cited it.
Three narrated it from al-Zuhri, identifying the unnamed Companion as Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri:
Al-Bukhari (23 and 2390), Muslim (7/112), al-Tirmidhi (2286), al-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-Sughra (8/113–114) and al-Sunan al-Kubra (7645, 8121, and 11742), Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (6890), Ahmad (3/86), al-Darimi (2/127), Abu Ya‘la (1290), Ibn Abi ‘Asim in al-Sunnah (1259), and al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah (3294) narrated it through Salih ibn Kaysan, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ... and cited it.
‘Uqayl ibn Khalid corroborated Salih. Al-Bukhari (3691 and 7009) and Ibn Abi ‘Asim (1258) narrated it.
Al-Zubaydi corroborated them both. Ibn Abi ‘Asim (1257) and al-Ajurri in al-Shari‘ah (1436) narrated it.
Al-Tirmidhi said, following the narration that explicitly names Abu Sa‘id: “This is more authentic.” *
