As for the other two narrations, there is a point open to criticism in their chains: both the narration of Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh and that of Jarīr—namely, Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Ḍabbī—for their memory has been subject to criticism. *
- “I give gifts to Quraysh in order to win them over, because they have only recently left the Age of Ignorance.”
Al-Bukhārī narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (3146) through Abū al-Walīd: Shuʿbah narrated to us from Qatādah, from Anas, who said: The Prophet said: ... and he then cited it.
He also narrated it (4334) through Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar—Ghundar—from Shuʿbah, who said: I heard Qatādah narrate from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
The Prophet gathered a group of the Anṣār and said:
“Quraysh have only recently emerged from the Age of Ignorance and hardship. I wished to compensate them and win them over. Would you not be content that people return with worldly goods, while you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah?!”
They replied, “Indeed.” He said:
“If the people were to take one valley and the Anṣār were to take a mountain pass, I would take the valley of the Anṣār, or the mountain pass of the Anṣār.”
I say: This narration indicates the occasion for the hadith under discussion.
Muslim (3/106), al-Tirmidhī (3901), Aḥmad (3/172), and Abū Yaʿlā (3002) also narrated it through several routes from Ghundar, with this chain.
Al-Bukhārī (3147 and 4331), Muslim (3/105), ʿAbd al-Razzāq (19908), Ibn Ḥibbān (7278), and Abū Yaʿlā (3594) also narrated it through several routes from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, as a report attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “I give gifts to men who have only recently abandoned disbelief, in order to win them over.” *
