3588—“They used to name their children after their prophets and the righteous who came before them.”
Muslim narrated it (7/171) through Sammāk ibn Ḥarb, from ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil, from al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, who said: “When I arrived in Najrān, they asked me, saying: ‘You recite, “O sister of Aaron,” although Moses came before Jesus by such and such a period?!’ When I came to the Messenger of Allah, I asked him about that, and he said: ...”—and then related it.
Al-Tirmidhī (3155), al-Nasāʾī in al-Sunan al-Kubrá (11315), Aḥmad (4/252), Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ (6250—al-Iḥsān), al-Baghawī in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (3362) and his exegesis (5/229), al-Ṭabarī in his exegesis (16/59), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (20/no. 986), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Dalāʾil (5/393) also narrated it through various chains from Sammāk, with this chain of transmission. *
3589—“They gave me a choice—between asking me in an improper manner and calling me miserly—but I am not miserly.”
Muslim (3/103) and Aḥmad (1/20 and 35) narrated it through three chains from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from Salmān ibn Rabīʿah, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: “The Messenger of Allah distributed something, and I said: ‘By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, others besides these were more deserving of it than they were!’ He said: ...”—and then related it.
The additional wording is found in Aḥmad’s second citation.
There is disagreement in the reports from al-Aʿmash concerning it:
