As for the hadith of Zayd, it is narrated through the route of Shuʿbah, from ʿAdī, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazīd, from Zayd ibn Thābit, may Allah be pleased with him:
“What is the matter with you that you are two parties concerning the hypocrites?”
Some of the Prophet’s Companions returned from Uḥud, and the people split into two groups regarding them: one group said, “Kill them,” while another said, “No.” Thereupon, the verse was revealed: “What is the matter with you that you are two parties concerning the hypocrites?” And he said: ... then he mentioned it.
Al-Bukhārī narrated it (4589), saying: Muḥammad ibn Bashshār related to me: Ghundar and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us; they said: Shuʿbah related it to us through this chain.
Al-Tirmidhī (1) (3028), al-Nasāʾī in al-Kubrā (1113), through Muḥammad ibn Bashshār, and Aḥmad (5/188), through Fayyāḍ ibn Muḥammad, also narrated it; both from Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, through this chain.
The following corroborated Ghundar in this wording:
- Muʿādh al-ʿAnbarī: in Muslim (1384).
- ʿAffān: in Aḥmad (5/187).
- Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī: in al-Ṭabarī’s Exegesis (5/121).
- Abū Usāmah: in Ibn Abī Shaybah (14/406) and al-Ṭabarī (5/121), though he did not give its wording.
- Bahz: in Aḥmad (5/184).
Two narrators differed from him in their wording:
