and (1/205–206), al-Dārimī (1/362), Ibn Abī Shaybah (2/152), ʿAbd al-Razzāq (5562), Aḥmad (2/259, 280, 499, and 505), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Mushkil al-Āthār (2600 and 2601) and in Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār (4/180), al-Bayhaqī (3/226), and Abū Yaʿlā (6158).
The second: through Abū Salamah, from him.
It was narrated by al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-Mushkil (2603) and in al-Sharḥ (4/180), Abū al-Shaykh in al-Amthāl (2/31), and Ibn Khuzaymah (1768), through two chains from him, from Abū Hurayrah.
Note: Abū Ḥātim, as recorded in his son’s al-ʿIlal (600), deemed defective the narration of Ibn Abī al-ʿIshrīn, from al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, on the grounds that it was halted at Abū Hurayrah.
Ibn al-ʿIshrīn was corroborated by Mubashshir ibn Ismāʿīl—in Ibn Khuzaymah’s narration—from al-Awzāʿī with the same chain.
Mubashshir is trustworthy, and the preceding chains support his narration.
Al-Bukhārī (3211), al-Nasāʾī in al-Ṣughrā (2/116) and al-Kubrā (936), and Aḥmad (2/512) also narrated it through both Abū Salamah and al-Agharr together, from him, in versions with varying wording.
The third: through Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from him.
It was narrated by Muslim (3/8)—though he did not give its wording—Aḥmad (2/239), Ibn Khuzaymah (1769), Ibn Mājah (1092), al-Bayhaqī (3/225–226), al-Baghawī in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (1061), and al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-Mushkil (2602) and in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (4/180).
