One of his strange inconsistencies is that he omitted this report attributed to the Prophet from Ibn Mas‘ud from both of his Jāmi‘ compilations. This is a new kind of inversion. Allah’s help is sought. *

Abu Dawud recorded it in his Sunan (4865) as follows: Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us. And, by another chain, Musa ibn Isma‘il narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: ... and he mentioned it. The second wording and the addition are Qutaybah’s.
Muslim and Ahmad (3/349) also recorded al-Layth’s narration through other routes from him, with the second wording and the addition.

Now, as I have been revising Sahih al-Jami‘ and Da‘if al-Jami‘ for several months, I found that al-Suyuti had cited the hadith under this heading with the first wording, attributing it to Ahmad on the authority of Abu Sa‘id. I was surprised by his attribution to Abu Sa‘id, for when I returned to the detailed documentation, I found it recorded from Jabir, Ibn ‘Abbas, and Abu Hurayrah, but not from Abu Sa‘id. This troubled me, so I began searching anew, keeping in mind the possibility that I had failed to come across it at that time. However, to no avail: I found no trace of it in any of the sources available to me, primary or secondary, including Majma‘ al-Zawa’id. But I
