“May your Lord forgive you!”
He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, never singled anyone out in a prayer for forgiveness without that person being martyred. He said: Umar ibn al-Khattab called out while riding his camel, “O Prophet of Allah, if only you had allowed us to enjoy Amir’s company a while longer!”
14—He said: When we arrived at Khaybar, their king, Marhab, came out brandishing his sword and saying:
“Khaybar knows that I am Marhab,
fully armed, a seasoned warrior,
when wars come blazing forth.”
He said: My uncle Amir came forth to face him and said:
“Khaybar knows that I am Amir,
fully armed, a daring warrior.”
He said: They exchanged two blows. Marhab’s sword struck Amir’s shield, and Amir moved low to strike him; but his sword recoiled upon him and severed the major vein in his forearm, and that wound caused his death.
15—Salamah said: I went out and found a group of the Prophet’s Companions saying, “Amir’s deeds have come to nothing; he killed himself.”
He said: So I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, weeping, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, have Amir’s deeds come to nothing?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Who said that?”
He said: I replied, “Some of your Companions.” He said, “Whoever said that has lied! Rather, he will have his reward twice over.”
Then he sent me to Ali, whose eyes were sore, and said, “I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger—or whom Allah and His Messenger love.”
