of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, nor even a trace of the dust they raised, until, before sunset, they turned toward a mountain pass containing water called Dhu Qarad, intending to drink from it, for they were thirsty. He said: They saw me running behind them, so I drove them away from it—that is, I kept them from it—and they did not taste a single drop.
He said: They went on and hastened through a mountain pass. I ran after them, caught up with one of them, and struck him with an arrow in the shoulder joint. I said:
“Take that! I am Ibn al-Akwaʿ,
and today is the day of the suckling infants!”
He said, “May his mother be bereaved of him! Is that al-Akwaʿ at dawn?” I said, “Yes, enemy of your own soul! It is al-Akwaʿ at dawn.”
He said: They abandoned two horses at a mountain pass, and I brought them, driving them to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
10—He said: Amir caught up with me carrying a vessel containing milk diluted with water and another containing water. I performed minor ablution and drank, then went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was at the water from which I had kept them away. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had taken possession of those camels, everything I had recovered from the polytheists, and every spear and cloak. Bilal had slaughtered one of the camels that I had recovered from those people, and was roasting some of its liver and hump for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, let me select one hundred men and pursue them; I will leave none of them alive to carry the news except that I kill him.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, laughed until his molars could be seen in the firelight. Then he said, “O Salamah, do you think that you could have done so?”
I said, “Yes, by Him who has honored you!” He said, “They are now being entertained as guests in the land of Ghatafan.”
He said: Then a man from Ghatafan came and said, “So-and-so slaughtered a camel for them. When they had skinned it, they saw a cloud of dust and said, ‘The people have come upon you!’ So they fled.”
