until I had left behind me every camel from the Messenger of Allah’s herd, peace and blessings be upon him, and they left it to me. Then I pursued them, shooting at them, until they threw off more than thirty cloaks and thirty spears to lighten their load. Whenever they discarded anything, I placed a cairn of stones over it, so that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions would recognize it.
Then they came to a narrow mountain pass, where they were met by a certain Ibn Badr al-Fazari. They sat down to eat their midday meal, while I sat atop a mountain peak. Al-Fazari said, “What is this that I see?” They replied, “We have suffered terribly from this man! By Allah, he has not left us since first light, shooting at us, until he has stripped us of everything in our hands.” He said, “Then four of you should go up to him.”
Four of them climbed the mountain toward me. When they came within speaking distance, I said, “Do you know who I am?” They said, “No. Who are you?” I said, “I am Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ. By Him who has honored Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, I pursue none of you without catching him, and none of you pursues me and catches me.” One of them said, “I think so.”
9—They went back. I did not leave my place until I saw the horsemen of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, making their way through the trees. At their head was al-Akhram al-Asadi, followed by Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, followed by al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad al-Kindi. I took hold of al-Akhram’s reins.
They turned and fled. I said, “O Akhram, beware of them lest they cut you off before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions catch up.” He said, “O Salamah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day, and know that Paradise is real and Hell is real, then do not stand between me and martyrdom!” So I let him go. He and Abd al-Rahman met, and al-Akhram hamstrung Abd al-Rahman’s horse; then Abd al-Rahman stabbed and killed him, and mounted his horse.
Then Abu Qatadah, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, caught up with Abd al-Rahman and stabbed and killed him. By Him who has honored Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, I continued pursuing them on foot until I could see no one behind me of the Companions
