“Will you not pledge allegiance to me, Salamah?”
He said: I replied, “I have already pledged allegiance to you, Messenger of Allah—at the beginning of the people and in their midst!” He said:
“And again.”
He said: So I pledged allegiance to him a third time. Then he said to me:
“Salamah, where is the small shield or buckler that I gave you?”
He said: I replied, “Messenger of Allah, I met my uncle, Amir, unarmed, so I gave it to him.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, laughed and said: … He then related the hadith.
Then the polytheists sent word to us seeking peace, until some of us mingled with others and we reached a settlement. He said: I was in the service of Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah: I watered and groomed his horse, served him, and ate from his food. I had left my family and wealth behind as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
When we and the people of Mecca had made peace, and some of us had mingled with others, I came to a tree, cleared away its thorns, and lay down at its base. Then four polytheists from the people of Mecca came to me and began speaking abusively of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I detested them, so I moved to another tree. They laid aside their weapons and lay down. While they were in that state, a caller cried out from the bottom of the valley, “To the Emigrants! Ibn Zanīm has been killed!”
He said: I drew my sword and charged at those four while they were asleep. I seized their weapons and gathered them into a bundle in my hand. Then I said, “By the One who has honoured Muhammad’s face, none of you shall raise his head without my striking the head that contains his eyes.” Then I brought them, driving them before me, to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
My uncle Amir also came with a man of the Abalāt tribe named Makraz, leading him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mounted on an armoured horse, among seventy polytheists. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at them and said:
“Release them; let the blame for initiating treachery, and for repeating it, rest with them.”
