the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say on the day of Ashura: ... He then cited the hadith.
It was also recorded by al-Bukhari (1892 and 4501), Muslim, and Ahmad (2/57 and 143), through other routes from Nafi', with similar wording. Al-Bukhari and Muslim added:
“Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, would not fast it unless it coincided with his regular fasting.”
Salim also narrated it from his father as a report attributed to the Prophet, in a very abbreviated form, with the wording:
“On the day of Ashura, whoever wishes may fast.”
It was recorded by al-Bukhari (2000). *
- “Indeed, this prayer was prescribed for those before you, but they neglected it. Whoever observes it will have its reward twice over. There is no prayer after it until the ‘witness’ rises—the ‘witness’ being the star.”
It was recorded by Muslim (2/208), Abu Awanah in al-Musnad (1/359), al-Nasa’i (1/90), Ibn Jarir al-Tabari (2/351), al-Dulabi in al-Kuna wa al-Asma’ (1/18), Ahmad (6/396–397), al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (2/452), and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (2166), through Abu Tamim al-Jayshani, from Abu Basrah al-Ghifari, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in the afternoon prayer at al-Mukhammas, and said: ... He then cited the hadith.
However, Muhammad ibn Ishaq differed, narrating: from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Abu Tamim al-Jayshani, from Abu Ayyub, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ... He then cited it.
It was recorded by al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (4/219/4084).
