Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

that he went on a campaign with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, toward Najd. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned, he returned with him. They were overtaken by the midday rest in a valley thick with thorn trees, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dismounted, and the people dispersed among the thorn trees to seek shade beneath them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dismounted beneath an acacia tree and hung his sword upon it. Jabir said: “We took a short nap, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called us. We came to him and found a Bedouin sitting with him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then…” He cited the hadith. Al-Bukhari and others added: “Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not punish him.” *

  1. “This wept because it missed the remembrance of Allah.”

It was recorded by al-Bukhari (2095 and 3584), Ahmad (3/300), and al-Bayhaqi in Dala'il al-Nubuwwah (2/560), through Abd al-Wahid ibn Ayman, from his father, from Jabir, who said:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to deliver sermons beside a palm-tree trunk. A woman from the Ansar, who had a servant skilled in carpentry, said: “O Messenger of Allah, I have a servant who is a carpenter. Shall I instruct him to make a pulpit for you, from which you may deliver sermons?” He said, “Yes.” So he made a pulpit for him. Then, when Friday came, he delivered the sermon from the pulpit. The trunk by which he used to stand began to moan like an infant. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then… He cited the hadith.

The wording is Ahmad’s. *

  1. “This is a day that the people of the pre-Islamic era used to fast. Whoever wishes to fast it, let him fast; and whoever wishes to leave it, let him leave it.”

It was recorded by Muslim (3/147–148) and al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (4/290), through al-Walid ibn Kathir, who said: Nafi' told me that Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, told him that he heard
