When al-Hajjaj killed Ibn al-Zubayr and crucified him upside down, he was once delivering a sermon when Asma’ came, accompanied by a female slave leading her, for she had lost her sight. She asked, “Where is your ruler?” … He then related the account. She said, “You lie! But I shall relate to you a hadith which I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:
‘Two liars will emerge from Thaqif. The latter of them will be worse than the former, and he will be a destroyer.’”
It was reported by Ahmad (6/352), and its chain of transmission is sound.
Also among them was Umm Abi al-Mihyah, who said:
When al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf killed ‘Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, he entered upon Asma’ bint Abu Bakr and said to her, “Mother! The Commander of the Believers has charged me with looking after you. Do you need anything?” She replied, “I am not your mother! Rather, I am the mother of the one crucified at the top of the mountain pass. I need nothing, but wait until I relate to you what I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:
‘A liar and a destroyer will emerge from Thaqif.’
“As for the liar, we have seen him; and as for the destroyer, it is you!” Al-Hajjaj said, “A destroyer of the hypocrites.”
It was reported by al-Bayhaqi in The Proofs of Prophethood (6/481–482).
Abu al-Mihyah was trustworthy; his name was Yahya ibn Ya‘la. However, I have not been able to identify his mother.
Also among them was al-Qasim ibn Muhammad al-Thaqafi:
Asma’ came to al-Hajjaj after she had lost her sight, accompanied by her maidservants … the hadith.
It was reported by Ibn Sa‘d.
I have not been able to identify this al-Thaqafi.
