The Ḥilyah (2/57), and al-Bayhaqi in The Proofs of Prophethood (6/481), through Abu Nawfal ibn Abu ‘Aqrab, from her:
She said to al-Hajjaj, “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, told us …” and she mentioned the hadith. She said:
“As for the liar, we have seen him; and as for the destroyer, I do not think it can be anyone but you.”
The wording is that of al-Tayalisi. Muslim’s version includes the account of al-Hajjaj’s crucifixion of ‘Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, Ibn ‘Umar’s passing by him and praising him, and the fact that he had advised him not to rise against the caliph, etc.
Abu Nawfal ibn Abu ‘Aqrab’s name was Muslim, though another name has also been given for him. He was trustworthy and was also among al-Bukhari’s narrators.
A number of others corroborated him, including Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji:
Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf entered upon Asma’ bint Abu Bakr after he had killed her son, ‘Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. He said, “Your son committed sacrilege in this House, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made him taste a painful punishment and did to him what He did.” She replied, “You lie! He was dutiful to his parents, frequent in fasting, and constant in prayer at night. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, informed us that:
‘Two liars will emerge from Thaqif; the latter of them will be worse than the former, and he will be a destroyer.’”
It was reported by Ahmad (6/351) and Ibn Sa‘d in The Classes (8/254), both through the same authentic chain of transmission.
Also among them was ‘Antarah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, who said:
