- “Abdullah is a righteous man; if only he would offer much prayer at night.”
Ibn Majah (2/1291/3919) reported it through Abdullah ibn Mu'adh al-San'ani, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, who said:
I was a young, unmarried man during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and I would sleep in the mosque. Whenever one of us saw a dream, he would relate it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. So I said, “O Allah, if there is any good for me with You, then show me a dream which the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, will interpret for me.” I then slept and saw two angels who came to me and took me away. They met another angel, who said, “Do not be alarmed.” They then took me to the Fire, and it was enclosed like a well. There were people in it, some of whom I recognized, and they took me to the right. When morning came, I mentioned this to Hafsah. Hafsah said that she related it to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said: … and he mentioned the hadith.
He said:
Thereafter, Abdullah would offer much prayer at night.
I say: Its chain of transmission is good. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among al-Bukhari’s narrators, apart from Abdullah ibn Mu'adh al-San'ani—the companion of Ma'mar. Al-Hafiz said in al-Taqrib:
“Truthful; Abd al-Razzaq was unduly harsh in criticizing him.”
Abd al-Razzaq corroborated him in al-Bukhari (3738) and Muslim (7/158), as did Hisham ibn Yusuf in al-Bukhari as well (7030), both reporting from Ma'mar in the same manner. Hisham added after the words, “Do not be alarmed”:
“You are a righteous man.”
Nafi' also corroborated Salim, reporting that Ibn Umar said: … and he mentioned a similar account.
