“Allah sent me to convey His message; He did not send me to be exacting.”
Its documentation has preceded under no. 1516. *
- “Ashura is one of Allah’s days. Whoever wishes may fast it, and whoever wishes may leave it.”
Muslim (3/147), Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf (3/55), Ahmad (2/143), and al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (4/289) reported it through Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar:
The people of the pre-Islamic era used to fast on the day of Ashura, and the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the Muslims fasted it before Ramadan was made obligatory. When Ramadan was made obligatory, the Messenger of Allah said: … and he mentioned it. *
- “Abdullah ibn Qays—or al-Ash‘ari—has been given a flute from among the flutes of David’s family.”
Muslim (2/192–193), al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (805), Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Musannaf (12/122/12308), Ahmad (5/351), and Ibn Sa‘d in al-Tabaqat (4/107) all reported it through Malik ibn Mighwal, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: … and he mentioned it.
Al-Nasa’i also reported it in al-Sunan al-Kubra (5/23/8058) by another route from Malik, with the wording:
One night, the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed by Abu Musa while he was reciting, and said: … and he mentioned it. He added:
When morning came, they told him of that, and he said, “Had I known you were listening to me, I would have rendered it even more beautifully.” Its chain of transmission is authentic. *
