“Yes, and they will drink, but they will not ...,” etc.
Recorded by Ahmad (3/354).
Its chain is sound as corroborative evidence. This Maʿiz was not declared reliable by anyone besides Ibn Hibban. *
3521—“The people of Paradise will be enabled to perform the deeds of the people of Paradise, and the people of Hell will be enabled to perform the deeds of the people of Hell.”
Recorded by Muslim (1/29–30), though he did not give its wording; likewise by Ibn Abi ʿAsim in al-Sunnah (1/57/124), and by Abu Dawud (4696)—whose wording is followed here. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr also recorded it through Abu Dawud’s route in al-Tamhid (6/6–7), as did Ahmad (1/27). All of them narrated it through ʿUthman ibn Ghiyath, who said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah related to me from Yahya ibn Yaʿmar and Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, who said:
“We met ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar and mentioned to him divine decree and what they were saying concerning it ...” He then related something similar, adding that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“A man from Muzaynah—or Juhaynah—asked him, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what are we acting upon? Is it something that has already passed and occurred, or something that is now being initiated?’ He said: ‘Something that has already passed and occurred.’ The man, or some of the people, said: ‘Then why act?!’ He said: ...” And then he cited it.
I say: By his words, “he then related something similar,” Abu Dawud is referring to what he, Muslim, Ibn Hibban, and others narrated through another route from Ibn Buraydah: the complete account. However, it does not contain the hadith cited in the heading. It has been referenced in al-Irwa (1/33–34) and in al-Sahihah (2903).
Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said thereafter:
“This meaning has been narrated from ʿUmar from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, through several routes; and among those who narrated this meaning ...”
