3518—“The first people against whom judgment will be passed on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought forth, and Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. He will say: ‘What did you do with them?’ He will reply: ‘I fought for Your sake until I was martyred.’ He will say: ‘You have lied. Rather, you fought so that it would be said: “He is courageous,” and it was said.’ Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.
“And a man who acquired knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran will be brought forth. Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. He will say: ‘What did you do with them?’ He will reply: ‘I acquired knowledge and taught it, and I recited the Quran for Your sake.’ He will say: ‘You have lied. Rather, you acquired knowledge so that it would be said: “He is a scholar,” and you recited the Quran so that it would be said: “He is a reciter,” and it was said.’ Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.
“And a man upon whom Allah had bestowed abundance and whom He had given every kind of wealth will be brought forth. Allah will make him recognize His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. He will say: ‘What did you do with them?’ He will reply: ‘I did not leave any avenue in which You love wealth to be spent without spending in it for Your sake.’ He will say: ‘You have lied. Rather, you did that so that it would be said: “He is generous,” and it was said.’ Then He will command that he be dragged on his face and cast into the Fire.”
Recorded by Muslim (6/47), al-Nasa’i (2/58), al-Hakim (1/107 and 2/110), al-Bayhaqi (9/168), Abu Nuʿaym in al-Hilyah (2/192), al-Khatib in Taqyid al-ʿIlm (197), and Ahmad (2/322), all through the route of Sulayman ibn Yasar, who said:
The people had dispersed from Abu Hurayrah, so Natil of Syria said to him: “O shaykh, narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” He said: “Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah say ...” Then he mentioned it.
