a tree. He said to me, “Go and find out who that is.” So I went, and it was Suhayb. I returned to him and said, “You ordered me to find out for you who that was, and it is Suhayb.” He said, “Tell him to catch up with us.” I said, “But his family is with him!” He replied, “Even if his family is with him!”—and on one occasion Ayyub may have said: “Let him catch up with us.”
When we reached Madinah, it was not long before the Commander of the Believers was mortally wounded. Suhayb came and said, “O my brother! O my companion!” Umar said, “Did you not know—or did you not hear—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Indeed, the deceased is punished for some of his family’s weeping over him”?
As for Abd Allah, he related it without qualification, whereas Umar said, “for some of their weeping ...”
I then went to Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, and mentioned Umar’s statement to her. She said, “No, by Allah! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not say that the deceased is punished because of anyone’s weeping. Rather, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ...” She then cited the hadith. [She said:]
“Indeed, it is Allah who makes people laugh and weep, and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another.”
Ayyub said: Ibn Abi Mulaykah also said: Al-Qasim told me:
When Umar’s and Ibn Umar’s statement reached Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said:
“You are reporting to me from people who neither lie nor are accused of lying, but hearing can be mistaken.”
Al-Nasai also recorded it (1/263), in a somewhat abridged form.
Note: It is clear from the preceding context that Lady Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, regarded Umar and his son—may Allah be pleased with them both—as mistaken regarding what they heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
“Indeed, the deceased is punished because of his family’s weeping—or some of their weeping—over him.”
She explained this on the grounds that hearing can be mistaken. Thus, she held that the correct wording of the hadith is that it is the disbeliever who is punished because of his family’s weeping.
