The first route: Saʿid ibn Kathir al-Madani said: Kulthum ibn Jabr and Musa—whose lineage he did not specify—narrated to me that they heard ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbbas say:
Abu Dharr said to me: “My nephew, I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, holding his hand, when he said: …” He then related it.
Al-Bazzar transmitted it in his Musnad (9/342/3899), (4/252/3657—Kashf al-Astar), and (2/492/2277—Mukhtasar al-Zawa'id), through the route of Saʿid ibn Kathir al-Madani, who said: … and then related it. Al-Bazzar said:
“It has been narrated from Abu Dharr through more than one route, and we know of no report narrated by ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbbas from Abu Dharr other than this hadith.”
I say: This is a problematic chain of transmission, for I have not found any biographical entry for Saʿid ibn Kathir al-Madani in any of the biographical works on narrators available to me—not even in Ibn Hibban’s al-Thiqat. Perhaps the attribution “al-Madani” is a corruption of “al-Mula'i,” for he belongs to this generation and is trustworthy. This may be why al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (2/43/23):
“Al-Bazzar narrated it with a good chain of transmission.”
Al-Haythami likewise said so in Majmaʿ al-Zawa'id (10/239).
Even more problematic is that they did not mention any narration by ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbbas from Abu Dharr; rather, they mentioned his brother, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas. Perhaps this is why al-Mundhiri made him ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas. Yet this hadith here—as you can see—is narrated jointly by Kulthum ibn Jabr and Musa; neither of them has been mentioned among those who narrated from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas. Rather, al-Hafiz al-Mizzi stated in the biographical entry for Musa ibn Jabr that:
