“And there we fully documented it!”
Thus, his reference to it only further confirmed his oversight and misled his readers. Allah’s help is sought!
Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic on account of the corroborating reports that I have presented before it.
- As for the hadith of Jabir, Sufyan narrates it from Amr ibn Dinar, who heard Jabir ibn Abd Allah say:
“Some of the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, drank wine in the morning, and were then martyred on the day of Uhud. The Jews said, ‘Some of those who were killed died while it was still in their bellies!’ So Allah revealed: ‘There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have consumed.’”
Abu Bakr al-Bazzar narrated it in his Musnad, then said:
“Its chain of transmission is authentic,” as cited in Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir (2/95). He said:
“And it is as he said, but there is an unusual feature in its text.”
I say: Perhaps the reason is that al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih through several routes from Sufyan—namely, Ibn Uyaynah—without the statement concerning the Jews; and in one version (4618), he added:
“That was before it was forbidden.”
I have only cited it from the Tafsir because I did not find it in al-Haythami’s Kashf al-Astar an Zawaid al-Bazzar, nor in al-Hafiz al-Asqalani’s abridgement of it. I had wished to consult its original source, al-Bahr al-Zakhkhar, known as Musnad al-Bazzar; but only eight volumes of it have been published thus far, and they do not include the Musnad of Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Hafiz also attributed it to it in al-Fath (8/279). And Allah Most High knows best. *
