Satan; so shun it, that you may prosper,” up to His words: “Will you not then desist?” A man then said:
“Messenger of Allah, what is the state of one among us who died while drinking it?”
So Allah, Most High, revealed: “There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have consumed ...” to the end of the verse.
A man asked Qatadah, “Did you hear it from Anas ibn Malik?” He replied, “Yes.” Another man asked Anas ibn Malik, “Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?” He said, “Yes—or I was told it by one who did not lie. By Allah, we did not lie, nor did we know what lying was.”
Recorded by Ibn Jarir (7/24–25) and al-Bazzar (3/351/2922).
Its chain of transmission is good. Ibn Kathir made no comment on it in Exegesis (2/93–94), nor did al-Hafiz in Fath al-Bari (8/279). He attributed it only to Ibn Mardawayh as corroborating evidence for the addition concerning which Hammad had doubts in the first route.
In Al-Durr al-Manthur (2/321), al-Suyuti also attributed it to Abu al-Shaykh.
- As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, Abu Ma'shar narrates it from Abu Wahb, from him. He said:
“Wine was prohibited in three stages. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Madinah while they were drinking wine and engaging in gambling. They asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about the two, so Allah revealed to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: ‘They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say: “In them is great sin and benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit ...”’ to the end of the verse.
“The people said, ‘It has not been prohibited to us; He only said: “In them is great sin!”’
“They continued drinking wine until, one day, a man from among the Emigrants led his companions in the Maghrib prayer and confused his recitation. Allah then revealed concerning it a verse more stringent than the first: ‘O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying.’”
