“The People of the Suffah would spend the night in the mosque. One of them died, and when his waist-wrapper was opened, two dinars were found in it. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Two brands!’”
It was recorded by ʿAbd al-Razzāq in his Muṣannaf (1/421/1649). Or perhaps he had begged from people merely to amass more wealth, as mentioned earlier in the report of Abū Bakr’s freedman, or something similar. And Allah knows best.*
3484 — “Indeed, charity extinguishes for its giver the heat of the graves; and on the Day of Resurrection, the believer will find shade only in the shade of his charity.”
It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (17/286/788): Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Rushdayn ibn Saʿd narrated to me; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, Ibn Lahīʿah, and al-Ḥasan ibn Thawbān narrated to me from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Abū al-Khayr, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ... and he mentioned it.
Through this route and from this same shaykh, it was also recorded by al-Bayhaqī in al-Shuʿab (3/212/3347), except that he transmitted it from him as follows: Abū Ṣāliḥ, the scribe of al-Layth, narrated to us; Ibn Lahīʿah and Rushdayn ibn Saʿd narrated to me from (!) al-Ḥasan ibn Thawbān, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith and (!) Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Abū al-Khayr ... with the same wording.
I say: I think that the wording, “from al-Ḥasan ibn Thawbān,” is an error by the printer or copyist. The correct wording is: “and al-Ḥasan ibn Thawbān.” Conversely, the wording that follows, “and Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb,” should read: “from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb,” as in al-Ṭabarānī. This is because ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith was not of the same generation as Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb; rather, he was among those who narrated from him. This is unlike al-Ḥasan ibn Thawbān, who was of the same generation as Ibn Lahīʿah and Rushdayn.
