This hadith has a corroborating report from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ, recorded by al-Bukhārī and others; it has been documented in Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz (p. 110, al-Maʿārif edition).
Another corroborating report is from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, narrated by Ibn Ḥibbān and others through a good chain of transmission; it has been documented in al-Targhīb (2/43).
Moreover, al-Mundhirī made a remarkable error regarding this report of al-Ḥimmanī: at (2/3/10), he attributed it to Masʿūd ibn ʿAmr, may Allah be pleased with him. In fact, it is a hadith of Abū Hurayrah, as you have seen.
I believe he confused it with another hadith on this subject, narrated by Masʿūd ibn ʿAmr, with the wording:
“No servant continues to beg while he is wealthy until he wears away his face, leaving him with no face before Allah.”
Al-Bazzār recorded it in his Musnad (1/434/919, al-Kashf), and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (20/333/760), through Ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAbd al-Karīm, from Saʿīd ibn Yazīd, from him, attributed to the Prophet with this wording.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission, as al-Ḥāfiẓ stated in Mukhtaṣar al-Zawāʾid (1/383/628). Al-Mundhirī indicated this in al-Targhīb (2/3/4), and then al-Haythamī in al-Majmaʿ (3/96), by pointing out its defect in the person of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā. The latter said: “There is criticism concerning him.”
I say: Al-Ḥāfiẓ summarized his status in al-Taqrīb by saying:
“Truthful, but extremely poor in retention.”
