Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“I never saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, fast the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah at all, nor did he ever leave the place of relieving himself without touching water.”
Ibn Ḥibbān transmitted it in al-Mawārid (69/165).
I say: No one besides Ibn Ḥibbān declared this Yaḥyā trustworthy, though he said (9/264):
“He would relate unusual reports from Abū Nuʿaym.”
I say: He included only three hadiths narrated by him in his Sahih; this is one of them. In the second, he is corroborated, and in the third he is paired with another trustworthy narrator. The third is found in abridged form in Sahih Muslim, while the second is also in al-Mawārid and contains a rejected phrase, as has been explained under hadith 2757.
For this reason, others deemed him weak. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said:
“He is weak in hadith transmission.”
One reason others deemed him weak was his conflation of the hadith under discussion with the hadith concerning fasting the ten days. For the latter was transmitted by Muslim and others through several routes from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, through the same chain. However, Hannād ibn al-Sarī differed, saying: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ narrated to us, from Manṣūr, through this chain, but without the second part.
Ibn Mājah transmitted it, and it is cited in Sahih Abi Dawud (2108). *
3482 — “What he says will soon restrain him.”
Aḥmad transmitted it (2/447): Wakīʿ narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us, saying: “I”—thus written—Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, “So-and-so prays at night, but when morning comes, he steals!”
He said: ... and then cited the above wording.
