3472 — (Whenever he supplicated, he did so three times; and whenever he asked, he did so three times.)
Muslim narrated it (5/179–180) from Zakariyya, from Abu Ishaq, from Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi, from Ibn Masud, who said:
While the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was praying near the Ka‘bah, Abu Jahl and some of his companions were sitting there. A camel had been slaughtered the day before, so Abu Jahl said, “Which of you will get up, take the afterbirth of the camel of such-and-such a clan, and place it on Muhammad’s shoulders when he prostrates?” The most wretched of the men rose, took it, and, when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prostrated, placed it between his shoulders.
He said: They began to laugh, some leaning upon others, while I stood watching. Had I possessed the strength, I would have thrown it off the back of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Yet the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, remained prostrating and did not raise his head until someone went and informed Fatimah. She came—she was then a young girl—and removed it from him. Then she turned upon them, reviling them.
When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had finished his prayer, he raised his voice and invoked Allah against them; and whenever he supplicated ... He then said:
“O Allah, deal with Quraysh!”—three times.
When they heard his voice, their laughter ceased and they feared his supplication. Then he said:
“O Allah, deal with Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, Utbah ibn Rabi‘ah, Shaybah ibn Rabi‘ah, al-Walid ibn Uqbah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt.” He mentioned a seventh, but I did not retain it. By Him Who sent Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, with the truth, I saw those whom he named lying slain on the Day of Badr; then they were dragged to the well—the well of Badr.
Abu Ishaq said: “The mention of al-Walid ibn Uqbah in this hadith is mistaken.”
Al-Bayhaqi also narrated it through this chain in Dala’il al-Nubuwwah (Proofs of Prophethood) (2/278). Abu Nu‘aym narrated the hadith cited in the heading from it in al-Hilyah (4/153 and 347), and said:
