ibn Munabbih: ʿAbd al-Samad—meaning Ibn Maʿqil—narrated to me, saying: I heard Wahb say: Al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mention al-Raqim (the inscription), and he said: ... Then he related it.
Al-Tabarani also recorded it through this same Ismaʿil in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (25/284/410), and likewise in al-Duʿaʾ (2/866/190).
Its chain of transmission is good and continuous, with each narrator explicitly using the formula of narration.
He then recorded it in al-Duʿaʾ and al-Muʿjam al-Awsat (3/160–162/2328 and 2329) through other routes from Wahb ibn Munabbih; thus, it is authentic, for this Wahb was a trustworthy narrator relied upon by both al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Al-Bazzar also recorded it (4/52–54/3178–3180) through other routes from Al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him, with similar wording.
Al-Haythami (8/142) said of the hadith:
“It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Tabarani in al-Awsat and al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar with similar wording, through several routes; and Ahmad’s narrators are trustworthy.”
It was then also reported from Anas, Abu Hurayrah, and Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, with closely similar wordings. Al-Bazzar also recorded the hadith of Ali (2/1867), and its chain of transmission is good.
It is found in the two Sahihs and elsewhere on the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar, with similar wording. I have preferred here to document it through the hadith of Al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him, because it contains details of certain matters not found in that version, while its chain of transmission is sound. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is the Grantor of success. *
