The other said: “I once did a good deed. I had some surplus wealth when people were struck by hardship. A woman came to me seeking assistance, and I said, ‘By Allah, I will not give it to you for anything less than yourself.’ She refused and went away. Then she returned and implored me by Allah, but I persisted and said, ‘No, by Allah; I will not give it to you for anything less than yourself.’ She again refused and left. She mentioned this to her husband, who said to her, ‘Give yourself to him, and provide for your children!’ So she returned to me and implored me by Allah, but I persisted and said, ‘By Allah, I will not give it to you for anything less than yourself.’ When she saw this, she yielded herself to me. When I had uncovered her and was about to have intercourse with her, she trembled beneath me. I said, ‘What is the matter with you?’ She replied, ‘I fear Allah, the Lord of all worlds.’ I said to her, ‘You feared Him in hardship, whereas I did not fear Him in ease!’ So I left her and gave her what was due to her for having uncovered herself to me. O Allah, if I did that for Your sake, then relieve us!’” He said: “Then it split apart, until they could make out the opening clearly.
The other said: “I once did a good deed. I had two elderly parents, and I had sheep. I would feed and give drink to my parents, then return to my sheep. One day, rain detained me, and I did not leave until evening. I came to my family, took my milking vessel, and milked my sheep while they were standing. Then I went to my parents and found that they had fallen asleep. I disliked waking them, and I disliked leaving my sheep, so I remained seated with my milking vessel in my hand until dawn woke them, and then I gave them drink. O Allah, if I did that for Your sake, then relieve us!’” Al-Nu‘man said: “It is as though I can hear this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” He said: “The mountain cracked with a sharp report, and Allah relieved them, so they came out.”
