and it is reported that al-Daraqutni was asked about him, whereupon he replied:
“Trustworthy.”
This hadith is part of a lengthy hadith which Imam Ahmad transmitted in al-Musnad. He said (6/16): Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated it to us through the same chain. And he said (4/333): Affan narrated to us—from his book—saying: Sulayman, that is, Ibn al-Mughirah, narrated it to us in full. It has been cited in al-Sahihah under no. 2459. *
3467 — “When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, conquered Makkah, Iblis uttered a cry, and his troops gathered around him. He said: ‘Despair of ever seeing Muhammad’s community upon associationism after this day of yours! Rather, tempt them regarding their religion, and spread wailing among them.’”
Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir (12/11/12318): Abdan ibn Ahmad narrated to us: Amr ibn al-Abbas al-Razi narrated to us: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Yaqub al-Qummi narrated to us from Jafar ibn Abi al-Mughirah, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said ... and he mentioned it.
Through al-Tabarani’s route, al-Diya transmitted it in al-Mukhtarah (59/12/1). This indicates that he regarded it as good, at the very least. I hold the same view, were it not for the fact that Amr ibn al-Abbas al-Razi is virtually unknown, for I have found no biographical notice for him—except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his Thiqat (8/486), through the narration of this Abdan, who was the hadith master al-Jawaliqi. Ibn Hibban’s practice of declaring unknown narrators trustworthy is well known; nevertheless, he said of him:
“He sometimes contradicts others.”
If it becomes clear that this al-Razi has a corroborating narrator, it will be transferred to al-Sahihah. And Allah, Most High, knows best.
