“Al-Bazzar narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, apart from al-‘Abbas ibn Abi Talib, who is trustworthy.”
I say: It is among the hadiths that al-Haythami did not include in his book Kashf al-Astar, although it meets its criterion. I therefore included it among the omissions I remedied in my book Sahih Kashf al-Astar. May Allah make it easy for me to complete it, along with its counterpart, Da‘if Kashf al-Astar, by His grace, generosity, and bounty!
In his notes on al-Bahr al-Zakhkhar, Dr. Mahfuz al-Rahman attributed it to al-Tabarani’s three Mu‘jams, but failed to point out that it is a different hadith, namely:
“Three people Allah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and theirs will be a painful punishment: a gray-haired adulterer, an arrogant poor man, and a man whom Allah has given merchandise, who neither sells except by swearing an oath nor buys except by swearing an oath.”
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir (6/301/6111), al-Awsat (6/288/5573), and al-Saghir (169, Indian edition), through the route of Sa‘id ibn ‘Amr al-Ash‘athi, who said: Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated it to us through the same chain. He said:
“No one narrated it from ‘Asim except Hafs, and Sa‘id ibn ‘Amr alone narrated it from him.”
I say: He too is trustworthy and one of Muslim’s shaykhs.
Through his route, al-Bayhaqi also recorded it in Shu‘ab al-Iman (4/220/4852).
There are other hadiths with a similar meaning, some of which add to others. Abu Ja‘far al-Tahawi cited some of them in Mushkil al-Athar (4/378–381), demonstrating that there is no contradiction between them. Consult it if you wish to gain further benefit. *
