“You have said it four times. With whom?”
He replied, “With so-and-so.” He asked, “Did you lie with her?”
He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “Did you touch her intimately?”
He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “Did you have intercourse with her?”
He replied, “Yes.”
He then ordered that he be stoned.
He said: He was taken out to the lava plain, and when he was stoned and felt the pain of the stones, he panicked and fled at a run. Abdullah ibn Unays met him—he had outstripped his companions—so he took a camel’s lower leg bone and threw it at him, killing him.
He said: Then he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him of this. He said:
“Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would have repented, and Allah would have accepted his repentance.”
Hishām said: Yazīd ibn Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl related to me from his father that, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw him, he said to my father:
“By Allah, Hazzāl! Had you covered him with your garment, it would have been better than what you did.” (1)
