Yet, despite my research, I did not find this hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās with a continuous chain either! Allah is the Granter of success.
- “Had you covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you.” He said this to Hazzāl.
It has been narrated in the hadith of Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl, and in mursal form from both Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir and Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib.
- As for the hadith of Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl, there are differing versions of it, as follows:
First: from Yazīd ibn Nuʿaym ibn Hazzāl, from his father:
Māʿiz came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and confessed before him four times. He then ordered that he be stoned and said to Hazzāl: … and he mentioned it.
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4377), al-Nasāʾī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (4/305–306/7274), al-Ḥākim (4/363), al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan (8/219 and 228), Ibn Abī Shaybah in al-Muṣannaf (10/78–79), Aḥmad (5/216–217 and 217), and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr in al-Tamhīd (23/126). Some of them narrated it in abbreviated form—the wording being that of Abū Dāwūd—while others narrated it at length, including a version recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4419). Aḥmad’s version is the most complete, and reads:
“Māʿiz ibn Mālik was [an orphan] in my father’s care. He had relations with a slave-girl from the clan, so my father said to him, ‘Go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and tell him what you have done; perhaps he will seek forgiveness for you.’ He only meant by this to give him hope that he might find a way out. So he came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have committed fornication, so enforce upon me the ruling of Allah’s Book.’ He turned away from him. Then he came to him a second time and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have committed fornication, so enforce upon me the ruling of Allah’s Book.’ Then he came to him a third time and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have committed fornication, so enforce upon me the ruling of Allah’s Book.’ Then he came to him a fourth time and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I have committed fornication, so enforce upon me the ruling of Allah’s Book!’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:”
